In Caress, Khalife makes an intimate statement of love at its most human, most encompassing level. He challenges the notion of unrequited and nostalgic love, dominant in Arab musical tradition, by joining the lover with the beloved and celebrating their humanness.
In Caress, Khalife presents a colorful mixture of instrumental and vocal compositions that range from traditional Arab taqasim, improvisation, to traditional Turkish-based samai, to Spanish flamenco, to Jazz. What unites these pieces is Khalife’s enchanting lyricism, combined with fresh and experimental ventures into multicultural terrains, beyond the limitations of the traditional Arab ughniyah, song.
Khalife also continues his quest towards the rationalization of tarab, musical ecstasy achieved through the internalization of rapture. This process seems to be a rational objective, one that routes the listener from the physical manifestations of tarab as an ecstatic experience to the mindful and meditative atmosphere of a concert performance. There is a definite modification of traditional terminologies in Khalife’s writings emanating from his rebellious spirit that always insists on challenging tradition.
